Golden Horn
The Golden Horn is a historic inlet of the Istanbul Strait in the city of Istanbul, Turkey. The strait is knows as the Bosporus and divides the European and Asian part of the city. The Golden Horn has the form of a horn or a scimitar. It is an estuary that joins the Bosporus and the Sea of Marmara. The peninsula that is thus formed is called Old Istanbul. This historic place has been the location of the ancient Byzantion and the center of Constantinople as well.
The estuary of the Golden Horn is prehistoric. It is 7.5 kilometer long and 750 wide at its widest. Its deepest point is 35 meters. Now, there are four bridges over it- Halic Bridge, Eski Galata Bridge, Ataturk Bridge and Galata Bridge. Currently, there is another bridge under construction that is planned to coneect the metro systems on both sides of the city.
Due to its deep natural harbor, the Golden Horn has been attractive for people settlers since ancient times. The naval headquarters of the Byzantine Empire used to be situated there. Walls were constructed along the shore to guard the city of Constantinople from invaders. A famous device was a huge chain that spanned at the entrance of the horn form the city to the old tower of Galata. It was to stop any foreign ships from entering. Te original tower was destroyed by the Latin Crusaders who ruled the empire for a short time. It was later rebuilt by Genoese who are responsible for the current famous Galata Tower.
Now, there are parks on both sides of the horn. The location is a famous touristic attraction. There you can see the Chamber of Commerce as well as a Jewish, Muslim and Christian cemetery.
